Christ back in Glory

It took nearly an entire day to get back to square one. An in progress photograph is very handy in showing up mistakes - I can now see several things I must change in the underpainting.

I'm posting this pic just to make you all feel good wherever you're at with your own painting this week. You know how sometimes things just don't go well, and the more important they are to get right the worse it is. This was supposed to be my effort for the British Association of Iconographers exhibition later in the year. I've already scraped off and re-gilded without achieving much discernible improvement, and today when I came back to it after a long break I decided the background would have to come off too as it was a total mess. All that lapis lazuli, ouch.

This splendid little St George was completed today by Wendy, a member of my lovely Monday painting group. I am posting him in honour of my dear departed friend and patron Margaret who died suddenly on St George's Day last week. Redoutable and energetic lady, living life to the fullest extent right to the last, may you rest in peace and rise in glory. The second picture is the icon of St Francis which she commissioned from me last year as a gift for her friend Professor Hugh Lawrence, eminent historian of the medieval period. It is a copy in miniature of a fresco at the Benedictine monastery at Subiaco, thought to be painted in the saint's lifetime because there is no halo and the inscription reads only 'Brother Francis'.
